The Glass Room by Ann Cleeves, Vera Stanhope # 5

Glass Rooms

The Glass Room by Ann Cleeves sees the intrepid Inspector Vera Stanhope thrust into the world of crime writers, aspiring writers, academics and publishers, when a writing retreat produces not just some fine prose, but a dead body as well. It’s also the first in the series I’ve read that I haven’t (yet) seen as an episode in the TV series. As a consequence, I wasn’t struggling to remember what happened (even while trying to stop my mind working that way and simply enjoy the read!) and could just sit back and relish the ride. And what a great ride it is.

Unpopular, but with sway in the book industry, when one of the principal draw cards for the writing retreat is found stabbed in what appears to be staged killing and Vera’s neighbour, Joanna, looks like the culprit, Vera has no choice but to come to her aid. When another body turns up, again in a fashion reminiscent of a fictive crime-scene, Vera and her sergeant, Joe Ashworth, fear the killer is not only unhinged, but hasn’t finished his or her murderous spree.

Every one of the attendees at the writing retreat is a suspect, whether staff, attendee or guest. Each person is hiding a secret shame or just a secret that renders them potentially liable for the crimes. Only Vera isn’t satisfied with what she eventually uncovers through interviews. It’s only when she begins to delve deeper that she discovers not only a series of dark histories, but people will long, unforgiving memories as well.

Slightly different to the other Vera books, The Glass Room harkens back to more traditional crime narratives in the Agatha Christie vein, where a house party of eccentrics in an old, forbidding mansion, with the wild coast as a backdrop, are at once both suspects and victims. More than any other book to date, this one allows the reader access to Joe and Vera’s thought processes and with Joe particularly, we begin to see sides to his character (and his relationship with his boss) that haven’t yet been explored. It also relies on detecting of the gum-shoe variety, where the police have to actually move away from their computers and venture to new places and homes to gather information and find clues.

Another great read from Cleeves and am already looking forward to my next adventure with Vera and co.

A Week-Long Festival for Internet Health

Glass Rooms

MozFest is convening technologists, activists and artists this October to tackle the biggest problems facing the web

The Internet is sick.

From ransomware and trolls to misinformation and mass surveillance, the very health of the Internet is at risk.

Says Mark Surman, Mozilla’s Executive Director: “The Internet is layered into our lives like we never could have imagined. Access is no longer a luxury — it’s a fundamental part of 21st century life. A virus is no longer a nuisance consigned to a single terminal — it’s an existential threat that can disrupt hospitals, governments and entire cities.”

But much of the Internet’s best nature is flourishing, too. Each day, new communities form despite members being separated by whole continents. Start-ups and artists have access to a global stage. And open-source projects put innovation and inclusion ahead of profit.

In an effort to heal the bad and uplift the good, Mozilla is reimagining MozFest, our annual London-based festival. We will address these issues head on.

This October, our eighth-annual festival will draw nearly 2,000 technologists, hackers and activists from around the world to experience:

A week-long festival

Three days isn’t enough time to heal the Internet. So for the first time ever, we’re making MozFest a week-long festival. Monday, October 23 through Friday, October 27 is “MozFest House”— workshops, talks and film screenings at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in London. Programming will include MisinfoCon London, an event exploring solutions to misinformation online; Detox & Defend for Women, an online privacy workshop; and much more. The week culminates with the traditional MozFest weekend at Ravensbourne College from October 27 to October 29

An interactive exhibit at MozFest 2016

19 big-name keynote speakers

hailing from nine countries. Speakers include Audrey Tang (Digital Minister, Taiwan), Gisela Perez de Acha (journalist and lawyer, Derechos Digitales) and Alan Knott-Craig (founder of Project Isizwe). Speakers will discuss hacking, botnets, digital rights and misinformation. Meet all 19 speakers

320 hands-on sessions

On Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29, sessions will be led by international experts and spread across five tracks: Privacy and Security; Digital Inclusion; Decentralization; Web Literacy; and Openness. Here’s a peek at just five of them:

The Glass Room, a sister event  hosted by Mozilla and Tactical Tech

The Glass Room is a London pop-up shop that’s like a ‘Black Mirror’ episode come to life. A faux technology store open for three weeks in central London, the Glass Room doesn’t sell products — it features interactive art about the role of technology in society. 69-71 Charing Cross Road, London WC2. Open October 25 to November 12 between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Très Chic: The Allure of Glass Room Dividers in Restaurants

Glass Rooms

Restaurant owners wanting to increase their revenue and gain more space may think that renovation is the only option. However, glass panel dividers can allow for the instant transformation of a space without having to close for costly renovations and while saving owners money.

A Larger Space

Unlike solid walls or dividers, glass room dividers allow natural light through, above, and around them. This makes the room feel lighter, larger, and more open while allowing the space to be subtly divided. The perception of a larger space can make it more inviting to customers who prefer a certain level of privacy when dining, but without interrupting their line of sight. This allows diners to enjoy their experience without visual distraction.

Because glass doors and dividers don’t swing outward like traditional doors and, instead, sit near the wall and slide to the side, more total square footage is available. This also contributes to the size of your space.

Better Organization

Utilizing glass to separate the space in a restaurant allows you to make the most of that space. You may notice that a certain area isn’t as popular with diners as another due to its proximity to the kitchen, for example. Placing a divider between the kitchen entrance and the dining space can resolve this.

Dividers can also help create more space, such as in preparation areas. If you need to expand your preparation area during busier times, glass allows you to do this for as long as the space is needed.

Save Money

Using glass to divide your space allows more natural light to pass through your establishment, which means you won’t have to illuminate the space with artificial lighting. Additionally, because cool and warm air can flow above and around them, your air conditioning and heating system won’t have to work harder to regulate the temperature of the space.

Generate Revenue

Products like movable wall panels can allow restaurants to generate more revenue by allowing them to instantly divide the space into private areas for special events. As an event is happening on one side of the panel, regular dining can continue to be offered in the remainder of the space. By using several wall panels, a space can be divided further, providing areas for several private events simultaneously.

Instant Modernization

Restaurants wanting to modernize their space need look no further than the sleek elegance of glass. Available in may transparencies and styles, glass can effectively add chic as it cleverly partitions any area. Unlike trends which can come and go, glass is a timeless yet always stylish addition to your establishment.

Space Plus, A Division of The Sliding Door Company offers completely customizable glass doors and divider walls for every space. Our wide selection of frame finishes, latches, and locks can make your glass product as unique as your establishment. Our customers are our partners, participating in every stage of the process. Stunning riverside house renovation in the Chagrin Valley

Glass Rooms

River Road Renovation is a riverside house in the woods designed by Peninsula Architects, in Moreland Hills, an affluent suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. The lot is very secluded, nestled across from the Chagrin River. The 3 acres are mostly wooded, with trails, ridges and plenty of wildlife, so they asked the architects to draw up plans that showed off the Chagrin Valley. A glass room addition led to a full house remodel that kept a family of three out of the house for a year while work continued. The challenge was to incorporate elements created in the new room into the existing spaces and rooms in the house.

The family room addition is the part of the home in which the family spends most of their time, which they have dubbed the “Tree House” because of how its wooden ceiling and open space complement the wooded view. Blurring the boundaries between indoors and out was the center focus to this bright and airy family room and adjoining dining room, which was constructed to simulate a farm silo.

A modern day tree house vibe was achieved with a high-arched, wooden beam ceiling and walls of windows all around.

This masterful design scheme was carried out by builder Dennis Baughman, who crafted an elaborate design without a framework. The mix of high wood beamed ceilings, large expanses of glazing and galvanized I-beams, the interiors feel like they are apart of nature.

The client’s also went to great lengths to make their renovations as sustainable as possible. Geothermal heating was installed, low VOC paint and reclaimed wood or FSC-certified wood was used. The interior design was all about merging clean, traditional and contemporary looks into one space.

The designers main focus of the project was on the local architecture dictating the look and feel of the home, with materials selected to enhance the country living experience. The barn siding used on the exterior of the home and on the fireplace surround is typical to the region of Ohio where the home is located. The pebbles used on the fireplace are what you would discover in the river situated across the street. These material selections are what gave the home its character and personality.

Holiday Season Elegance: What Complements Glass Room Dividers

Glass Rooms

The holiday season is a time for celebrating. Not only do you get to spend time with friends and family, but it’s also the season for decorating and making your home look and feel as festive as possible! With the holidays right around the corner, you may be looking for some decorating ideas.

Keep reading for tips for creating decorative room dividers that are sure to bring holiday cheer to your home.

Pick a Theme

The first step in decorating glass room dividers is to pick a theme. Since glass room dividers are often transparent, you want to choose a theme that you can use throughout your entire home. This way, the colors and overall motif don’t look disjointed.

Some of this season’s top modern holiday themes include:

  • Retro holiday décor (tinsel, bright red, black, silver, etc.)
  • Gold, silver, and other metallic colors
  • Minimalistic modern room accents (candelabra, modern holiday art, etc.)

By picking a modern theme and using the same décor throughout your home, you can set a décor foundation for the holiday season.

Go for a Frosted Look

Looking to turn your home into a winter wonderland for the holidays? If so, you likely have all sorts of white, silver, and crystal décor. To ensure your wall dividers fit perfectly into the theme, you may not have to do much at all.

If you have our frosted or smoked frosted glass room dividers, your glass panels are already the perfect look to fit into a frosty winter holiday theme. If you’re feeling a little creative, you can add some festive designs, shapes, and scenes using a dry erase marker to our milky, laminated or deluxe white glass room dividers. Be sure to use colors that match the theme you’ve already selected to keep in line with existing décor.

“Wrap” the Panels

If the frosted look doesn’t quite fit your holiday theme, another option to consider is to cover the doors with wrapping paper. While this will prevent any light from entering through the glass, there’s nothing more festive than a panel wrapped in holiday-themed paper.

For a more simplistic décor idea for interior glass doors, consider purchasing or creating a large ribbon or bow. This is an easy way to spruce up your glass wall dividers for the holiday without spending too much time or money.

Looking to Maximize Your Space? We Can Help!

After spending hours decorating your home for the holidays, you may have realized that you want a more modern look, or maybe you want to maximize all of your available space to get the most out of every square foot. No matter if you live in a three-story home or a one-bedroom loft, our glass products are the ideal solution for dividing open space or adding a touch of privacy.

At The Sliding Door Company, we offer a wide range of glass door solutions, including room partitions, closet doors, barn doors, suspended doors, and more. Separate but Free: How Glass Room Dividers Solve the Open Floor Plan Problem

Glass Rooms

Open floor plans can make even the tightest spaces feel more roomy and hospitable. Such free-flowing designs have been a feature of American homes for over one hundred years, but they became popular on a broad scale around the middle of the last century when modernism prevailed over more traditional architectural styles. Now, glass room dividers are redefining “openness.” In doing so, they’re once again transforming the American home.

A Complicated Love Affair

Since the mid-20th century, Americans have engaged in an on-again/off-again relationship with the open floor plan. Some homeowners embrace the freedom, spaciousness, and visibility of wide open layouts. They want their living spaces to be connected rather than severed and disjointed. Others bemoan the lack of structure and organization.

The critics have a point. There’s something tidy about closed floor plans. Each room has its own purpose, its own distinct style. When someone walks through the doorway that separates the living room from the study, they know they’re entering a new space with its own raison d’être, its own style, and its own “feeling.” Opponents of an open floor plan believe that you lose something important when you tear down the walls.

A Happy Medium

Then there are those who take the middle ground. They like the thought of an open floor plan—the bright airiness and free-flowing spaciousness—but they haven’t yet given up on the notion of separate rooms. They’re constantly searching for a happy medium between the two extremes.

Many of them have found the perfect solution in glass room dividers and interior glass doors. Glass doesn’t block light or obstruct views. It does, however, draw a clear line that lets everyone know where one room ends and another begins. With glass, a designer can create separate “zones” within a home without tearing the space apart.

In other words, glass walls and sliding doors combine the best of both styles. They let homeowners cordon off space while still maintaining visibility, connection, and openness—key traits of the much-admired open floor plan.

A Modern Solution to an Age-Old Problem

Sliding glass doors and glass room dividers belong to the modern world, with its emphasis on simplicity and openness. That being said, glass is versatile enough to fit in almost any home, from urban lofts to traditional farmhouses.

That’s particularly true given the wide range of custom options available. At The Sliding Door Company, for example, designers and homeowners can choose from more than a dozen different types of glass and nearly half-a-dozen styles and frames.

Those searching for an ultra-modern look often prefer a Solo design featuring a single pane of uninterrupted glass, while a Continental design, with its metal frame in the color of your choosing, is perfect for those who want to combine the contemporary with the classic. Of course, a good designer can make any style divider work well in almost any interior. The key is to have a plan.

When it comes to function, glass also gives people a great deal of freedom. Those who want a good balance between privacy and light can opt for frosted or smoked glass. Those who want maximum visibility can stick with clear glass, which also tends to fit well in more modern interiors. Homeowners can close them when they want to seal off a space and open them when they want full visibility and access.

Transform Your Interior

Want the best of both worlds? Whether you’re a designer or a homeowner, The Sliding Door Company can help you choose the glass room dividers and sliding glass doors that match your interior.

Inequalities fueled unrest in Iran. Will its leaders do anything to address the anger?

Glass Rooms

Screen Shot 2018 01 02 at 4.51.09 PM - Inequalities fueled unrest in Iran. Will its leaders do anything to address the anger?

When the occasional Maserati roars through the crowded streets of Tehran, past crowded buses and shabby domestic sedans, pedestrians sometimes unleash streams of curses in its wake.

On the popular “Rich Kids of Tehran” Instagram account, attractive 20-somethings flaunt $1,000 Hermes sandals and frolic poolside at lavish mansions in a capital where, perhaps in another part of town, the desperate hawk their own kidneys to feed their families.

Before Iran erupted in the most significant anti-government protests seen here in nearly a decade, anger was simmering over the excesses of a privileged elite that profited from international sanctions, corruption and connections to an unelected theocracy.

Then members of the country’s two main political factions each tried to channel the public mood with a gamble.

Last month, announcing his latest frugal budget aimed at managing a years-long economic slump, President Hassan Rouhani for the first time called on the government to publish the amount it spends on every institution. It was a clear reference to the many Islamic schools and foundations connected to the ruling theocracy that receive lavish public funds with no oversight.

In the city of Mashhad, home to a $15 billion religious foundation that is Iran’s wealthiest, hard-line allies of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tried to undercut Rouhani by organizing a rally against his plans to raise gas prices and slash the monthly cash grants the government gives to citizens.

But the Dec. 28 rally quickly turned into a protest against the entire political class, spreading to dozens of cities as mainly working-class demonstrators set fire to government buildings and chanted both “Death to Rouhani” and “Death to the dictator.”

The ensuing week of unrest left at least 21 dead and prompted a swift security clampdown. The instability prompted the two political blocs that have jockeyed for power in Iran to close ranks to protect a system that has enriched them while millions struggle with unemployment, bankruptcy, rising prices and environmental degradation.

The hard-liners who see themselves as the pious guardians of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the Rouhani-backing reformists who seek gradual economic and social reforms have each acknowledged the people’s economic struggles. But both sides have been badly damaged by the protests, and neither has explained how it would address the demonstrators’ demands for reforms.

“The way the protests have unfolded has brought the two factions closer to each other,” said Ali Reza Nateghi, an activist from the reformist camp who campaigned for Rouhani. “Unity among reformists and hard-liners has increased because at the end of the day we are all in the same boat.”

Images of demonstrators tearing down photos of Khamenei — who is supposed to be revered as God’s representative on Earth — were “a huge embarrassment for a regime that has spent billions over the last 40 years telling the world how legitimate they are,” said Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington.

It was particularly surprising that the protests began in the countryside, in conservative regions that the clerics long thought to be their strongholds.

Rouhani, an establishment cleric, won two elections by promising to mend an economy that was devastated by the populist policies of his hard-line predecessors and increasingly isolated because of Iran’s nuclear program. The protests in his fifth year in power show how little he has been able to achieve even in a system where Khamenei is the ultimate authority.

Rouhani has alienated reformists by failing to win concessions from hard-liners and failing to nominate any women or minority Sunni Muslims to his Cabinet. His austere fiscal policies, aimed at controlling inflation, have worsened the suffering of lower classes while mainly elites are seen to have gained from his signature achievement: the 2015 nuclear agreement that eased international sanctions against Iran and prompted a slow resumption of foreign investment.

“You can have sympathy for Rouhani, but there is a sense that this is government that doesn’t have a good grasp of what’s going on at the grass-roots level,” Vatanka said. “There is this disconnect between the Rouhani government and the lower classes and the younger demographic, especially in the countryside.”

In unveiling his budget last month, Rouhani said he wanted to improve transparency by revealing details of the $6 billion the government spends annually to fund religious institutions. These entities are largely controlled by members of the ruling establishment and their families, and many were receiving money with no accountability.

“We have no way other than transparency to root out corruption,” he told parliament. “We must all go inside a glass room so that people can see every step we take.”

Meanwhile, scattered protests raged for much of last year as financial institutions — many connected to the powerful Revolutionary Guard paramilitary organization — defaulted on payments owed to investors.

Millions of Iranians have placed their savings in these credit institutions, which control as much as one-quarter of the banking sector but have been compared by some experts to government-sanctioned Ponzi schemes.

“None of the banks were punished, none of the officials were punished, none of the money was paid back,” said Misagh Parsa, a sociology professor at Dartmouth College and author of the 2016 book “Democracy in Iran.” “As early as last July, you saw protests against these banks where the slogans were becoming quite radical.”

At one such demonstration, Parsa said, investors chanted against the clerical establishment: “They enrich themselves through Islam, they have made the people miserable.”

The financial protests were just one precursor to the recent unrest. In Ahvaz, a town in the southwestern oil-producing region where desertification has caused blinding sandstorms and power outages, protests have taken place almost weekly for the last two years.

“One day it’s laid-off workers, one day teachers, one day people protesting the drought and the tiny particles in the air that suffocate them,” said Aboulfazal Abedini, a 36-year-old journalist who lives in Ahvaz.

Last week, he said, hundreds demonstrated against the government every night.

It is unclear that either Rouhani’s camp or the hard-liners are willing or able to address people’s grievances.

After Rouhani unveiled his budget, Sadegh Zibakalam, a political scientist close to the reformist camp, said it would be difficult to cut the budgets of religious institutions.

“For now, nothing can be done,” Zibakalam told the semiofficial ILNA news agency. “But at least we can make it transparent.”

At 78 and in ill health, Khamenei still has time to embark on reforms to make Iran more inclusive and reduce the powers of clerics, analysts say. Rouhani, widely believed to seek the leadership for himself, might need to move to the center to placate the vast numbers of young Iranians seeking economic change and greater social freedoms.

But analysts say Iran’s establishment could instead hunker down to counter President Donald Trump, who has cheered on the protests against a “brutal and corrupt” government — even after introducing his visa ban against Iranians. This month he has another opportunity to decertify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal, which could trigger tougher U.S. sanctions that would undermine Iranian moderates and worsen the pain for protesters.

“If the Trump administration seriously wants to do something, it should leave the nuclear deal alone because it’s working for now,” Vatanka said. “The biggest tool in the hands of the U.S. in shaping the behavior of Iranian regime is tapping into the anger of the Iranian population.”

Reading Recap: September 2018

Glass Rooms

At the end of every month, I take a look back at my reading journal and share the books and my thoughts on them here. The comments below are excerpts from my full reviews on Goodreads; you can always keep up with my reading in real-time over there.

I’m a little behind on my reading recaps!

Not even kidding, my friends: How is it November already?! I feel like I spent all of September anticipating our big vacation with my parents—and reading books to get me in the mood—then, while we were enjoying our cruise on the Danube, October evaporated right before my eyes. I have that weird feeling of having had intense experiences and having somehow missed a whole bunch of stuff.

Our river cruise passed through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary, and I devoured books set in those locations before, during, and after our trip. Here’s the first batch; the rest are coming next week in my October recap. Happy travels! reading!

The Lake House by Kate Morton | 3 stars
This book weaves two stories: reminiscences of a past tragedy and its aftermath, and a modern story that reflects some of the themes of the decades-old story. I didn’t care all that much about the modern story, but the flashback stuff was well told.

I really enjoyed that this was almost a ghost story: The characters are all haunted in different ways by a tragic event at a Midsummer party in 1933. It’s gut-wrenching, and the fallout lasts the entire lifetimes of the characters, as it would. I thought the resolution of the mystery of the past was solid, and I enjoyed the few red herrings that came up along the way to keep me wondering what really happened. I love the outrageously serendipitous stuff that happens to tie up loose ends in 19th century novels—”Hello! Jane Eyre, this is your cousin, and BTW, you’re rich now.”—and I thought the tidying up of all the disparate threads in this sprawling story was very satisfactory… but the in-trouble cop of the modern storyline didn’t move me.

Favorite highlight: “Mother objected to Alice’s habit of caressing her pocketed book because it made her look “shifty, like you’re up to no good,” a description Alice had decided she didn’t mind one bit.”

Cafe Europa: An Edna Ferber Mystery by Ed Ifkovic | 3 stars
The good: The story is set in pre-WWI Budapest, and it’s rich in details that ground it in that particular time and place. The beginning-to-fade glory of the Café Europa in the real-life Arpad Hotel (frequented by American travelers), the still-famous New York Café, and Café Gerbeaud, the Roma music, the cakes and coffee with whipped cream, the dynamic politics… they’re all brought to life with vivid descriptions that took me right there.

But the story. Ah, the story. I was expecting a sort of cozy murder mystery, and there’s definitely a murder that gets solved—but it felt like sometimes the characters forgot they were in a murder mystery and were just in Budapest, doing stuff. I wish the mystery plot had been better and more present most of the time. The main characters are based on real-life people—the writer Edna Ferber and London suffragette Winifred Moss—and, sadly, they are flat on the page. The most interesting characters either got killed off or devolved into caricatures, but at least they’re interesting.

Read this if you want a sense of the splendor of Budapest café society; the writing did put me right there and made excited to visit Budapest again—and much of that charm and the cakes still exist in Budapest right now… just skim over the parts about muuurrrddeeeerrrr.

Favorite highlight: The descriptions of food are very evocative: “Vladimir Marko, hovering, put a platter of rye bread on our table, each slice bearing a chunk of opaque lard speckled with paprika and salt…” or “Dark, bone-tingling coffee with frothy whipped cream, a concoction I’d become fond of and knew I’d demand in every American restaurant till the end of my days.”

The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna | 4 stars
Set in the fictional village of Gost in Croatia, this is a very moving and mysterious story of the aftermath of the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. The action of the book takes place in 2007, when outsiders—a British woman named Laura with her teenage daughter and son—move into an abandoned house. Laura sees the Croatia she wants to see: a bucolic countryside full of possibility. But… “Laura wanted cheese and cured meats, olives soaked in oil and vine tomatoes, like in Italy. Instead she found imitation leather jackets, mobile-phone covers and pickled vegetables.”

A local man named Duro is hired as a handyman to help repair the house, and it’s not long before he’s also helping to repair wounds in himself and the transplanted family. As Duro grows closer to the Brits, he begins to unspool his mysterious past and the secrets of Gost in his narrative.

As I read, I had to keep reminding myself that this was a novel not a memoir—the characters and the events felt so real to me. Duro’s narration lacks self-pity and his matter-of-fact accounts of heartbreaking moments make them even sadder. He’s a complex character, alternately sympathetic, trustworthy, and sinister—and a hard man who also knows compassion. He also understands from first-hand experience the ways in which large-scale war allows people to exploit their power on a personal level and give in to their baser instincts.

This is a sometimes stark, often moving, and occasionally funny examination of the aftermath of wars—both political and emotional—and the bonds of family and friendship. There’s also a gorgeous love story at its heart. It was desperately sad in some parts, but beautifully told and with an undercurrent of resiliency and hope, alongside weariness and bitterness.

Favorite highlight: “…more than anything, I want to protect Anka, can’t bear the idea of her ever being hurt. I would sleep all night across the doorstep of the house if she asked me.

Murder on the QE2(Murder, She Wrote #9) by Jessica Fletcher, Donald Bain | 2 1/2 stars
Full disclosure: I’m a super-nerdy Jessica Fletcher fan, and when I need a break between serious books, I often reach for silly ones like this (or Star Trek novelizations) to give my brain a break. (And in preparation for our cruise, I was also watching crappy videos of the Love Boat on YouTube, so you can see what I was going for, right?!) I usually enjoy these light books—they’re the literary equivalent of potato chips—but this was pretty clunky. I liked visualizing Angela Lansbury and the descriptions of the Queen Elizabeth 2 were nicely rendered, but overall, this was a bit of a slog. #teamjessicafletcher4evah

Favorite highlight: “Unfortunately, the vacation was marred by murder, a situation that seemed to be following me around these days.”

The Last Palace: Europe’s Turbulent Century in Five Lives and One Legendary House by Norman Eisen | 3 stars
This exploration of Czech history through the lives of people who lived in a particular mansion in Prague is very well researched and well written. I was immediately pulled into the narrative at the beginning, and I’m very interested in Czech and WWII history, so it’s right up my alley.

I got about 35% into it, then decided to take a break. Not because the book isn’t good, but because when I read non-fiction, I miss having characters to “visit” with while I’m reading. Because the book follows different historical figures, I didn’t become to attached to any one of them, and it’s very focused on the politics of war, which is a slow read for me.

For 4-star fiction that explores history through the lens of a unique house, read The Glass Room by Simon Mawer.

Journey Into Fear by Eric Ambler | 3 1/2 stars
This was my first Eric Ambler novel—I learned about it on the super-fun Spybrary podcast—and I will definitely read more in the future. Set during WWII, this is the story of an ordinary man caught up in extraordinary circumstances. After a whiz-bang start in Istanbul, most of the action takes place on a freighter traveling to Italy (onboard a ship again!). There’s a suspicious cast of characters: a femme fatale, a potential hit man, and several people who may not be what they appear to be. It was good fun, and I enjoyed imagining what I would do in a similar situation.

Favorite highlight: “Love of country, we see, is merely a sloppy mysticism based on ignorance and fear. It has its uses, of course. When a ruling class wishes a people to do something which that people does not want to do, it appeals to patriotism.”

The Balkan Trilogy (Fortunes of War #1-3) by Olivia Manning | 3 stars
This book is 946 pages long, and I usually love a nice thick book like this one, but when I reached the end of the first part of the trilogy, I decided to take a break.

Set at the beginning of World War II in Bucharest, Romania, just after Germany invaded Poland, the story follows a group of expats—mostly British—who work and live in the city. It’s a very intimate look at their daily lives, and it reads almost like a diary, although it’s fiction and it’s written in the third person. There’s not much of a plot to speak of, but lots of daily life things happen: personal betrayals, hurt feelings, plenty of time spent talking about politics in cafes, and lots of drinking. They seem to always be going for cocktails—not that I can blame them: The Nazis were breathing down their necks.

I think I would have been more interested in continuing now if I’d connected with any of the characters, but the almost-heroine Harriet remained distant for the 300 pages I spent with her, and her husband Guy is more an idea than fleshed-out human. I enjoyed a sort of tragic-clownish character named Yakimov, but I wasn’t emotionally invested in any of them.

If you’re interested in WWII history, this story reveals generally unexplored territory; I didn’t know much about what was happening in Romania at that time. But, the story is all told from the perspective of outsiders— the privileged British diplomats—and I suspect that the WWII experience for Jews, peasants, and other Romanians was quite different. I will probably finish the remaining 2/3 at some point, however, because it was engaging and suspenseful. Honestly, I was worried about Harriet and Guy and Yakimov ALL THE TIME.

Favorite highlight: “A notice appeared under the glass of the café tables to say it was forbidden under threat of arrest to discuss politics.”

Kingdom of Shadows (Night Soldiers #6) by Alan Furst | 4 stars
I think I’ve read almost all of Alan Furst’s Night Soldiers books. They’re gripping thrillers with just the right punch of emotion, and usually tell the story of an ordinary person who finds him or herself up to the neck in espionage. In this installment, a 40-something Hungarian expat in Paris works in the resistance,  undertaking one dangerous mission after another. The book unfolds in vignettes that are almost stand-alone short stories, and that really keeps the action moving. By the end, I was quite smitten with our hero Nicholas Morath, a good man living in terrible times.

Favorite highlight:
Kabatskaya melankholia,” he said, mouth tight with disapproval.
“What’s that?”
“A Russian expression—tavern melancholy.”

KPIX At 70: Covering The 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake « CBS San Francisco

Glass Rooms

(KPIX 5) — As part of our look back at 70 years of KPIX broadcasting, we remember the 15 seconds that changed our lives and served as a major wake-up call to anyone who lives in the Bay Area.

The date: October 17, 1989. The World Series was the Battle of the Bay with the Oakland A’s versus the San Francisco Giants. If you were watching KPIX News at noon, you would have seen then-anchor Loren Nancarrow talking about the first game in the series to be played at Candlestick Park. It was Game 3; the Giants lost the first two games to the A’s at the Coliseum.

“The San Francisco Giants play host to game three of the series tonight couldn’t ask for a better day for the third day of the series – sunny,” noted Nancarrow to our audience, live from the KPIX studios on the fifth floor of our building at 855 Battery St. While the series would be broadcast by a rival network, KPIX was ambitious. We staffed the series as if it were our own.

“I was not in the newsroom that day, I was at Candlestick Park,” recalled reporter Barbara Rodgers.

Our team included anchor Wendy Tokuda. “I was field anchoring.” said Tokuda. She was set up outside in the parking lot, full of notes, and background information. Her photographer was veteran news and sports photographer Al Lopez.

Also at Candlestick: sports director and anchor Wayne Walker, and as noted, Rodgers. Rodgers was supposed to go on vacation the next day. She had been covering the Giants’ season, and went with the team to Chicago in the playoffs with the Cubs, traveling with the team on their plane.

Inside the park, waiting to watch the game, with a handful of peanuts, and a beer, a true legend.

“I had never been to a World Series, I was so excited,” said San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana.

Montana and his wife Jennifer came to the park with their newborn baby Nathanial. They had left their younger girls with friends. Their first stop: a luxury box where 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr and his wife Candy were seated.

“We had just left Mr. and Mrs. DeBartolo’s box. and I had Nathanial,” remembered Jennifer.

Thousands of miles away in Washington DC, Rep. Leon Panetta was getting ready to watch the game. He and a handful of other Californian lawmakers were invited to watch the series at New York’s Rep. Tom Downey’s place. The group was among the 25 million viewers who watched the game on television. Panetta represented California’s then -16th Congressional District, which included all of Monterey and San Benito counties, plus most of Santa Cruz County, including Loma Prieta.

“I was able to get a ticket to that series, but because I was in Washington I gave the ticket to my wife – there were several tickets and she brought my youngest son to the game,” remembered Panetta.

The broadcast began with a taped recap of the first two games. The Montanas ran into their friend, the late 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark who had since retired from football. He began to coo over the baby.

At 5:04 pm, everything changed.

“Dwight kissed Nathanial and the earthquake happened,” said Jennifer.

“I was doing an interview with a fan and just as she was telling us how excited she was, we heard this roar and we both looked up because we thought it was a plane going overheard, that’s what it sounded like,” said Rogers. “But as soon as we looked up, we looked down at our feet, because we could feel the stadium actually shaking and we looked at each other and said ‘Earthquake!’”

KPIX anchor and reporter Kate Kelly was on assignment near the Lefty O’Doul Bridge. When the quake hit, she wondered if the car had a flat or the bridge was going up. But then her eyes cast on a big 18-wheeler truck which was dramatically tilting back and forth, making a horrible sound as it smashed and broke a street lamp. She knew immediately it was a severe quake, and the crew headed back to the station, traveling down the Embarcadero.

At that time, the double-decker freeway along the Embarcadero, Interstate 480, took drivers to and from the Bay Bridge, from Battery and Broadway Streets. As Kelly was driving down the Embarcadero, she saw clouds of dust in the air, and concrete falling from the elevated freeway. People had streamed out of the Ferry Building, and were all pointing to the structure. Kelly and her photographer stayed in the lane furthest away from freeway, fearing it might fall.

“I kept a mental notebook of everything that I was witnessing, so I could inform our newsroom,” said Kelly.

Back in DC, the lawmakers could not believe their eyes.

“We were watching the game and all of a sudden obviously the television went blank,” said Panetta. He then tried to get hold of his wife, but could not. The phone lines were jammed.

A magnitude 6.9 quake had jolted the Bay Area It lasted about 15 seconds.

“It did shake, I mean it! It really shook,” said Rodgers on that day as she debriefed Tokuda and Walker in the Candlestick parking lot.

“We were out in the parking lot and I remember watching those microwaves on top of the trucks start to swing … and the concrete was going like this,” said Tokuda, waving her hands.

As for the Montanas, at first Joe was hesitant to leave. The lights in the stadium had gone back on, and he thought the game would resume. But,Jennifer had lived through a few quakes, and knew instinctively it was time to leave. The scene was at first full of panic: as fans streamed out through the tunnels in Candlestick. It took four hours to get home as the freeways were jammed.

On the Nimitz Freeway, Interstate 880, reporter Sherry Hu and her crew including photographer were on assignment in Oakland. They were tempted to swing by Jack London Square where reporter Doug Murphy was going to cover the crowd watching the game on large screen televisions. They would need to turn off on the Cypress Freeway – another elevated portion of I-880 that cut through West Oakland – and would drop them off to see Murphy.

At the last moment, they decided to get to work, and skipped taking the turnoff.

“As soon as we passed the turnoff to the Cypress Freeway, the truck started rolling like this and bouncing and the freeway looked like it was undulating,” remembered Hu.

At KPIX on Battery Street, the quake knocked us off the air for eight minutes. Then, backup generators kicked in and provided enough juice for a makeshift studio. At the helm, legendary anchor Dave McElhatton. All of our ENG equipment was located in a narrow glass room. The air conditioning had stopped due to the power failure and the generators could not provide the power. KPIX engineers carefully smashed the glass with hammers to keep the air circulating so we could take in feeds and play back videotape.

Running into the station, dripping in sweat, veteran reporter Dave Bryan. He was with a crew in the financial district and saw debris all over the streets: shattered windows as well as brick facades tumbling off of ornate buildings.

Bryan caught his breath, took a seat next to Mac at our update desk, and told viewers what he saw. Then, video from Chopper 5 came in and our jaws dropped.

The Cypress Freeway had collapsed: about a mile and half of a freeway was no longer. Employees from a tire shop came out from their building and jumped in to help. Murphy was already on the scene, leaving Jack London Square with his photographer to document the horrible devastation. One of the shop workers climbed up the twisted, crumbling structure and tried to help. He told Murphy that there were a lot of smashed cars and dead bodies, but some individuals who were alive and needed immediate rescue.

“Two kids up there … they’re really hurt,” said the man.

The collapse of the Cypress killed 41 people. KPIX interviewed Chris Mitchell, who was in the lower part of the Cypress. His car started to vibrate and he thought he had a flat tire. Then he saw the freeway begin to tumble down in front of his eyes, trapping him in his car. He explained how he saw the freeway falling down from in front in a big wave, and that he survived because when the structure fell on it, he was between cross members it created a small little space for him to live. “I hit the lotto or whatever,” he said. He was able to kick out the back window of his car to escape.

The epicenter was near Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains, 50 to 60 miles away from downtown San Francisco. Damage was heavy in Santa Cruz, but imagine if the area was more populated. A total of 63 people died in the quake, more than 3,500 people were hurt.

Also from Chopper 5, our viewers and the newsroom saw how a section of the Bay Bridge collapsed. One car plunged over the fallen section of roadway, killing the driver named Anamafi Moala, and seriously injuring her brother who was her passenger.

They were traveling the opposite way on the bridge after being directed by emergency workers, who were trying to evacuate drivers were stuck on the bridge

The Marina District in San Francisco was devastated. A ruptured gas main caused a fire which residents helped fight. The hydrants stopped working, so a fireboat named the Phoenix which was in the Bay in front of the district, began pumping bay water to the fire engines, which in turn pumped waters to the hoses. The fire destroyed four buildings while the quake caused several other buildings to collapse. More than 70 buildings were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable.

Back in Washington, Congressman Panetta asked President Bush for a plane to head immediately back to the Bay Area, where he assessed the damage and helped to pull together state, federal and local agencies to provide assistance. Before he left, he got a call from his wife who told him she and their son had safely made it back home to the Carmel Valley.

Loma Prieta ended decades of earthquake tranquility in the Bay Area. The last major quake was in the region was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

The good news: “People really pulled together,” said Tokuda.

Some good feedback from cave experts in Thailand. Iterating with them on an escape pod design that might be safe enough to try. Also building an inflatable tube with airlocks. Less likely to work, given tricky contours, but great if it does.

The AP reports that “two divers will accompany each boy as they are gradually extracted.”

The boys and their families know about the operation and support it, officials said.

“Today is D-Day,” Osatanakorn said.
