South Africa plane crash – dramatic pics show charred wreckage after jet comes down in Pretoria, killing one and injuring 20

Glass Rooms

ONE passenger has died and another 20 were injured after a plane crashed into a field near South Africa’s capital this afternoon.

Photographs taken by bystanders show the wreckage of a Convair plane lying in a field on the outskirts of Pretoria after apparently crashing into a building.

The badly damaged plane can be seen with major damage to the noise and tail

The aircraft crashed near a residential area called Derdepoort, which is near the Wonderboom airport, emergency services say, according to press agency AFP.

The charter plane has Martin’s Air Charter on the side its fuselage.

Russel Meiring, a spokesman for paramedic company ER24, says the injuries range from minor to critical.

Photographs from the scene show a damaged charter aircraft in a field and a damaged building which the plane apparently flew into.

Debris is strewn all around the crash site
The plane missed a nearby residential area when it came down

Enigmatic Engineering – Yuichi Yokoyama’s Visionary Architecture – Part 1

    Glass Rooms

The most interesting comic-book of this years SPX was easily Yuichi Yokoyama’s New Engineering. I’ve been obsessing about Yokoyama’s work since I first saw random pages from his books posted online. Now that I actually got my hands New Engineering I’ve been concocting all kinds of strategies for reading and understanding this work. I decided to string together a bunch of notes, observations and theories I’ve accumulated over the last few of weeks into this loose essay. Hopefully this will make some sense to someone out there and they will find it useful in looking at Yuichi Yokoyama’s work. By no means do I think any of this is the definitive way of looking at this work. Picturebox plans on publishing further volumes in the near future, and that work may contradict some of things I say here.

I see the stories in New Engineering fall into two distinct, though interconnected, categories. First, there are the ‘engineering’ stories, where massive architectural projects are realized by gigantic machinery with some aid from the humans (are they human?). The second category contains everything else. These are stories of combat, athletics, warfare, fashion, etc. I’ll first talk about the separate categories. Later I’ll attempt to make some sort of unified statement on their relationship. First up is engineering.

Spread from Memorial To Newton (read from right to left).

    I. Enigmatic Engineering

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw pages from New Engineering (the story with that title also shared by the
book) was J.G. Ballard’s first novel The Wind from Nowhere. In the book, the surface of the whole planet is rapidly destroyed by a powerful wind, which increases in force with deadly regularity. As the planet is literally sandblasted into a cue ball, and civilization is on the brink of annihilation, a mysterious structure is being built – in secret – by a megalomaniacal millionaire Hardoon. The description of the building process has an uncanny resemblance to the Yokoyama depicts the massive feats of engineering in his stories.

    Here’s a taste:

“The hill had gone, obliterated beneath the gigantic jaws of fleets of bulldozers, its matrix scooped out like the pulp of a fruit and carried away on the endless lines of trucks.

Below the sweeping beams of powerful spotlights, their arcs cutting through the whirling dust, huge pylons were rooted into the black earth, then braced back by hundreds of steel hawsers. In the intervals between them vast steel sheets were erected, welded together to form a continuous windshield a hundred feet high.

Even before the first screen was complete the first graders were moving into the sheltered zone behind it, sinking their metal teeth into the bruised earth, leveling out a giant rectangle. Steel forms were shackled into place and scores of black-suited workers moved rapidly like frantic ants, pouring in thousands of gallons of concrete.

As each layer annealed, the forms were unshackles and replaced further up the sloping flanks of the structure. First ten feet, then 20 and 30 feet high, it rose steadily into the dark night.”

detail from meorial to newton by yokoyamaDetail from Memorial To Newton. “Like frantic ants…”

This is only the first of several similar passages in the novel. Ballard totally dispenses with a human perspective. The construction is apprehended from a series of unnatural vantage points that allow us to experience the massiveness of the endeavor. Humans at this scale are “like frantic ants.” Since Ballard doesn’t have any visuals accompanying his prose, we have to imagine the scene. With Yokoyama, we are provided with vague glimpses. Chris Lanier has a great description:

“Yokoyama uses off-panel space with a droll brilliance — machines that cut rock or drill into the earth appear from the edges of the panels, needing no plausible leverage or further apparatus to do their work. The mysterious engine that runs these tools is the invisible will of the artist; the drill bits and jackhammers are really extensions of Yokoyama’s pen. The people in these stories have far less presence than the machines — they come at the end of the narratives to make the finishing touches and
    voice their approval.”

What distinguishes New Engineering from The Wind from Nowhere is that Ballard eventually tells us what is being built and why: a gigantic steel pyramid designed to withstand the force of the wind. Hardoon, the builder, hopes not only to survive the catastrophe but thrive in it as well. But his motives aren’t entirely clear and sometimes the reader is led to believe the pyramid exist solely so Hardoon can comfortably sit in his steel cage, watch the world turn to dust and listen to the savage howl of the hurricane. Hardoon is a typically Ballardian character who transforms and adapts as best he can to circumstances on the ground (disasters in this case and in his early novels, but in his later work modernity and technology are enough). We encounter these characters in what we recognize as ‘our’ world, but they already belong to another, hidden world, emerging in our midst like one of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. And with the new world come new psycho(patho)logies. This is what’s missing from Yokoyama’s structures. The author consciously avoids depicting the psychology of his world. In the interview that is published in New Engineering Yokoyama says that he wants to create

“ Characters without psychology – I am interested neither in the feelings of people nor in their emotions. I examine only what
is to the eye. My characters do not work towards the satisfaction of a collective or individual interest, but to achieve a great goal, to achieve a great mission. ”

From New Engineering. Click to Enlarge.

These “great goals” and “great missions” are opaque to us. They seem absurd, strange and bizarre. Again Chris Lanier:

“ Its four stories show the construction of strange monuments and spaces. They describe huge mobilizations of resources for apparently useless ends. One “public work” is a fluorescent-lit room, set into a boulder, positioned in front of an absolutely straight (and also artificially constructed) canal. Another is a glass room, outfitted with chairs and a floor of Astroturf, set under the surface of a man-made lake. These constructions are not only absurd in themselves, the methods of construction are entirely impractical. The third “public work” is an artificial mountain, assembled from boulders that are dropped from airplanes, then coated with glue flowing from a single hose.”

If Yokoyama wants to banish psychology from his pages, we as readers want to put it right back. Because we lack direct knowledge of Yokoyama’s world we proceed archeologically and anthropologically. We compare our world, or the artifacts of our world to the ones depicted in New Engineering in an attempt to excavate the smallest bits of meaning. Chris Lanier finds similarities between New Engineering and the kinetic architecture of superhero comics. James Benedict Brown can’t help but wonder about the ‘why,’ ‘how’ and ‘where’ of the New Engineering projects and compares their depiction to the sterility, purity and disconnection of contemporary mainstream architectural photography.

cenotaph for sir isaac newton by boulee
Cenotaph for Sir Isaac Newton, by Boulle.

Indeed, Yokoyama’s world is close enough to the one we live in to make direct comparisons irresistible. In the “Memorial
to Newton” sequence Yokoyama provides us with a clue as to purpose or origin of these enigmatic works. The comic shows crowds of people irresistibly drawn to climb the immense Memorial to Newton structure. This is the only building that has any reality
in our world and can be looked at as a key of sorts. It refers to the unbuilt and imaginary Cenotaph for Sir Isaac Newton by the 18th Century visionary French architect Etienne Louis Boulle. Reading New Engineering comics I couldn’t help but think of the endless variety of massive and visionary architecture that has been built or un-built in the course of human history. Starting with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Egyptian Pyramids, Roman Aqueducts and Temples, the great Gothic Cathedrals, the visionary paper architecture of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, The Crystal Palace, to the massive and often baffling projects of today’s
starchitects that are going up all over the world. The list goes on.

The Pyramids of Las Vegas and the wonders of Dubai.

Many of these structures, especially the ancient ones, are as unfamiliar to us as Yokoymas. What do we make of the Great Pyramids? The Easter Island sculptures? After centuries of trying to ‘solve’ the riddle of the Great Pyramid we’re really no closer to understanding the psychology of the builders.

    pyramid climbers
Like frantic ants… to the top!

Perhaps the closest relatives of Yokoyama’s context-less plastic mega-structures can be found in places like Dubai (or Las Vegas, etc). Dubai is a veritable laboratory of modern architectural gigantism. Artificial islands and archipelagos in the shape of palm trees or the world itself, rotating skyscrapers, tallest towers in the world, these are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Ostensibly we think we understand these structures. They are supposed to be engines of economics growth, steel and concrete representations of financial capital. When we look at them in the larger context of globalization, global warming, war, and peak oil they seem baffling and foreign, but they retain an irresistible and seductive pull. We are drawn not just to what these structures represent, but also to their sheer physicality. In fact climbing great monuments of civilization is one of the great past times of today (and yesterday). People will travel thousands of miles for the privilege of climbing not only the Great Pyramids, but also the pyramids of Las Vegas. What has been the initial impulse of the many people who first encounter the Great Pyramid of Egypt? To climb it!

    Part 2 coming soon.

How to make your cybersecurity event more engaging

    Glass Rooms

I’m fascinated by how cybersecurity enthusiasts and organisers present and run their events, as that seems to be crucial in (a) getting people to come along, (b) triggering action.

I attended three cybersecurity events in September – Cryptoparty London, Cy3sec and Cybersecurity for ‘Real People’ – and learnt a lot from how they engage, or don’t. Conclusion: Infosec events need to be a LOT more practical and engaging and to deliver on what they promise. Drinks/snacks also help with after-work events.

    1. Cryptoparty London

    Organised by:

A tech consultancy and a civil rights group put together the London event but this is just part of a larger decentralized movement of CryptoParties with events happening all over the world. “The goal is to pass on knowledge about protecting yourself in the digital space. This can include encrypted communication, preventing being tracked while browsing the web, and general security advice regarding computers and smartphones.”

    Approach

Put it in a bar, call it a ‘party’, have infosec-themed cocktails, offer interactive break-out workshops (on Tor browser, Bitcoin, email encryption and smartphone surveillance) and lightning talks with a stage and large screen, surveillance-based visuals, digital art and music. September was the tester – it went very well and is now going monthly.

    Pros

    • Beginners welcome
    • Networking, sense of community, expert access
    • A nice dark room and sociable vibe for tired people after work
    • Practical workshops, how-tos and Q&As
    • Stickers and swag on the tables

    Cons

    • It’s held in London – I’m in Birmingham
    • It ran way over time so I missed my second workshop
    • Logistics – bar noise/numbers made workshops hard to hear for some
    • Attendees seemed highly engaged and knowledgable already – bar too high for newbies?

    Summary

CryptoParty’s main objective is to “tear down the mental walls which prohibit people to even think about these topics” – on that aim, it was definitely the best for engagement and practical learning. I’m now set up on Tor Browser and just wish I could have stayed longer.

    2. Cy3Sec

    Organised by:

Fizzpop – a popular Birmingham-based maker/hacker group with its own workshop space. Its first cybersecurity workshop was set up on Meetup and is set to run monthly.

    Approach

One presenter talking to attendees around a table, small group style. There was a tech fail on the projector front which didn’t help. The speaker was a real-life locksmith so the focus was very much on how the hackers break in. The Meetup blurb said:

“The first hour will be on ‘beginner’ topics, then half an hour to chat, then an hour on a more advanced topic(s). If people want to do a short talk, great. There may be Bluetooth lock picking. There might be hacking a local server. A talk on decapping chips. If you’ve something to teach or explain about, please let us know.”

    Pros

    • Beginners welcome
    • Quiet workspace, easy to get involved
    • Unusual angle – locksmith/hacker, physical access to devices
    • Free-roam topics and tech nerd view (how to kill people and start wars through hacking) = an interesting experience!

    Cons

    • Attendees were Fizzpop members, a brain surgeon and a someone with a Masters in cybersecurity – not exactly beginners friendly
    • Mostly a one-way talk, lots of assumed knowledge, and attack based with cybersecurity solution more an afterthought
    • Departed from promised structure and timings
    • Sense of being an outsider entering a tech nerd’s member’s club

    Summary

I never knew where this session was going or what I was going to get or even when it was going to end. Some structure and communication would really help this session. The Fizzpop-style focus on physical hacking and USB baiting, and ‘how stuff works’ was way above my knowledge grade but learning how to hack could fill a useful gap if done at beginners level and with a sense of playful fun that is the Fizzpop way.

Despite the exclusive feel, I am tempted to go back – albeit with a flask of tea and some biscuits, and just enjoy the random weirdness of Fizzpop life.

    3. Cybersecurity for ‘real people’

    Birmingham ORG cybersecurityOrganised by:

The Open Rights Group Birmingham – which runs regular events on cybersecurity and data privacy for concerned citizens. It feels more political although the offer is also practical. It campaigns to protect and promote digital rights in Birmingham and beyond. It was also set up on Meetup:

    Approach

The purpose was to offer practical cybersecurity advice that ‘real people’, not just digital geeks, can understand and apply in their daily lives. There were two main speakers, a large screen, a Powerpoint presentation and chairs for the audience. Although it was billed as a workshop, it was really more of an advice session/talk, with little opportunity to interact – one of the problems of running through a set of slides.

    Pros

    • Beginners welcome – had the most varied mix of people of all three events
    • Darkened room for viewing slides, the acoustics weren’t great though
    • Practical advice on sending secure emails and messages, password managers, Tor browser
    • Beginners friendly – idea of just ‘change one thing’
    • Friendly, open, inclusive vibe

    Cons

    • More political stance – which may put off some; would be good to know more about the trade-offs not just follow advice blindly
    • Tried to pack too much in – people asking more in-depth questions but no time to cover
    • Top-down talk – less engaging than a practical workshop

    Summary

This was my first ORG session and the organisers obviously know their stuff, but it was a skim across the surface and felt like an intro session to a longer course. I think they could increase engagement with less content and more practical focus, and as the session started at 6.30pm, maybe see if they can get sponsorship for some refreshments as most people come directly from work.

    The immersive option?

Data privacy is a hard sell, even though it’s one of the biggest issues of our time with surveillance and data capture growing exponentially and often obfuscated and kept out of sight.

Most people know they should do ‘something’ but maybe think it’s too techy, or a hassle, or like me, tell themselves that they’ll get around to it one day and hope they don’t get sprung in the meantime. In short, there are barriers for everyone to overcome.

This next event could be the answer… and I’m pleased to report that I’ve managed to get a spot helping out at The Glass Room London, which opens for three weeks at the end of October.

Curated by Tactical Tech and produced by Mozilla, The Glass Room, was attended by over 10,000 visitors in New York City last year.

It is ALL about the engagement, with people coming in off the street to an immersive, dystopian tech store that exposes the state of their data privacy. Data Detox Kits will be handed out. And there will be interactive exhibits.

It looks really really good, and will be blogged.

First Look: Great Pizza at Strathcona Beer Company

    Glass Rooms

Everyone seen the promo video for Strathcona Beer Company yet? They’re really showing their love for skaters, motocross, bocce ball, weenie-roasting, working out on rooftops, and beer! This place finally opened on Friday, July 15 after a bit of controversy over opening up a brewery in a low-income neighborhood that struggles with addiction.

Strathcona Beer Company is located on East Hastings & Campbell, kitty-corner to Ray-Cam Cooperative Community Centre, and on the same block as Les Amis du Fromage, Tom’s Eastvin Winemaking, and Dan’s Homebrewing Supplies. It’s also across the street from The Medicinal Cannabis Dispensary. Good times.

At least their opening wasn’t as big of a fuss as when Pidgin opened back in February 2013. Gentrification is a complex and sensitive issue. Maybe we should all discuss it over…

    …PIZZA! OMG wonderful-smelling pizza…

The stars aligned this day cuz I love me a well-made, crisp, clean pilsner. It’s an underappreciated style that has some unfortunate connotations.

They’ve got a black, white, gold, and concrete theme here.

    Simple hours. Love it.

Maybe it’s partly to assuage the controversy, but these neon letters saying “Community” were the first thing I saw when I walked in the door. For better or worse, this place (and its customers) are now part of this community.

On the left side are empty growlers, a fridge of ice, a fridge of 40oz bottles, and the growler-filling station with the kitchen behind it. To the right of this photo is the merchandise corner and the washrooms.

Branded bags of ice for your partay.

It’s hilarious and awesome that these guys are the first brewery to sell in classic 40oz malt liquor sized bottles — and that it’s a Belgian Strong Ale is a surprising choice.

    The merch corner.

    Big skater/eastside theme here.

The bar area with a view of their massive tanks. MASSIVE!

Even though it might look like a restaurant, it’s counter service here, so you order and pay at the bar then find somewhere to sit.

They also have this interesting mystery glass room. Semi-private party room?

Some really interesting design touches. A lot of the seating is communal long tables. I like it.

And right across the street is the aforementioned Medicinal Cannabis Dispensary, one of the oldest and earliest in Vancouver. Interesting that the NIMBYs were ok with the dispensary but not ok with the brewery… Remember, the Astoria Pub is just a block away.

A little message on the door as you leave. But really, what you encounter in this neighborhood is nothing if you’ve ever dined at Dixie’s BBQ, Pidgin, Darby’s Gastown, Save-on Meats, Acme Cafe, etc.

The food menu. Aside from three salads, their main focus is PIZZA! This is a first for a local brewery, I think! I know Dogwood also does pizza, but we’re talking about real, made-from-dough pizza. Steel Toad I would put in a slightly different category because that’s a full-on brewpub with TVs and a food menu, but doesn’t do growler fills.

Apparently Strathcona’s pizza guy is from Pizzeria Barbarella on Broadway near Fraser. I had moderate expectations.

Their beer menu. The ones that were available had the checkmarks, in addition to their new Premium Pilsner. Looks like they have a kolsch and a saison coming. All of their beers are approachable, sub-7% beers.

NOTE: I wish they listed prices and serving sizes for their flights and glasses of beer. Probably a temporary oversight. Or maybe I wasn’t looking in the right place?

I can’t keep from hearing “dolla dolla bill y’all” in my head when I look at their logo.

Their flight boards are shaped like a skateboard!

I tried everything except their Lemon Radler.

I won’t go into a huge amount of detail on their beers cuz they’ve only been open two weeks, but I think I’ve got a good sense of their target market for their beers and what they’re trying to achieve.

L-R: Premium Pilsner (5%), India Session Ale (4%), Strathcona Gold Belgian Ale (6.65%), and Strathcona British-Style IPA (6%).

The pilsner was super clean and easy to drink. No flaws per se, but at the same time not that interesting either. If I came back for a pizza, I’d definitely order this again though. But my favourite pilsners usually have a bit more of a unique hoppy element to them, like Pilsner Doehnel. If you bring your non-craft beer geek friends here, this is the beer for them.

The ISA had a hint of iodine/plastic/bandaid, so hopefully they can resolve this off-flavour as time goes on and they get used to their equipment. Aside from that, it’s just an ok ISA.

The Gold had a big Belgian yeast aroma and flavour but with that same plastic/bandaid thing happening as with the ISA, but maybe to a lesser extent. I also got a bit of a hot alcohol thing which was weird for a beer that’s only 6.65%, so I just have to chalk it up to being a really new brewery.

The IPA is brewed as a British-style IPA, which is a bit more malty and less aggressively hoppy as typical West Coast IPAs.

Overall, I wasn’t that thrilled with the beer, but I would go back for the pilsner. I imagine these beers to be in the same “camp” as breweries like Postmark, Red Truck, and Off the Rail — breweries that do lower ABV beers that aren’t too challenging, and are more for social lubrication rather than geeky, beard-stroking inspection.

Then, after a somewhat lengthy wait, this landed on the table:

Diavola ($16) with tomato sauce, mozzarella, fior di latte, sopressata, kalamata olives, sliced jalapenos, chili oil, and fresh basil.

The crust is a golden yellow and quite thin. I am totally fine with the amount of toppings they put in the pizza. For a crust this thin, I think the balance works. If you like your pizza meats spicy and salty, you’ll like the Diavola.

Some charring on the bottom. Not quite leopard spots.

If this was a restaurant, I would be impressed by their pizza. But this is a brewery with a kitchen attached, and I was pleasantly surprised and a bit amazed. This was great stuff. The crust was crisp with a bit of chew, and not in any way tough, even as the pizza sat for ~20 minutes as I chatted and drank with my dining partner. From what I remember from my last visit to Pizzeria Barbarella more than three years ago, their pizzas were much more loaded, more chewy, but not as crisp as I’d like. At Strathcona, the pizzas are thinner, crispier, and less heavy. Looks like their pizza guy hasn’t just replicated Barbarella’s pizza, he’s done his own thing and I love it.

I hope this pizza wasn’t just a fluke. I’ll be back to try some more while their beers hopefully continue to be refined and improved.

Dokter Tanpa Dinding – Selamat Yudisium Dokter!!

    Glass Rooms

“Each day I live in a glass room unless I break it with the thrusting of my senses and pass through the splintered walls to the great landscape.” – Mervyn Peake

Tanggal 5 Juli kemarin, sebagian besar adik kelas saya menjalani Yudisium Dokter. Akhirnya resmilah mereka menyandang gelar dokter berpasangan dengan S. Ked. Harusnya traktir saya dong. Hehehe…

Hehe… mau mengucapkan selamat aja repot banget sampai bikin blog. Ah, tidak apa-apa. Agar ucapan selamat saya sedikit berbeda. Dan sekaligus menambah koleksi tulisan saya. Hehehe…

Saya ingin berbagi dengan teman sejawat baru kita. Tentang sebuah rasa yang hingga kini masih saja terasa manis. Tentang sebuah pikir yang mengejutkan namun memang gue banget. Tentang sebuah dokter tanpa dinding.

Teman, kita telah menjalani tahun-tahun melelahkan menjalani pendidikan profesi. Melelahkan tetapi sangat sangat sangat mengundang senyum bila dikenang.

Masyarakat Udanawu memang menikmati kehidupan desanya. Mereka bertani, berladang, sebagian berjualan. Rumah mereka masih banyak yang berlantai tanah namun jangan salah, hartanya berhektar-hektar sawah. Beberapa rumah tampak bagus, selidik punya selidik, sang ibu menjadi TKI di negara tetangga.

Saya bekerja di klinik swasta. Klinik rawat inap. Awalnya, sebagian pasien ingin mencoba. Sebagian lagi dirujuk bidan. Sebagian lagi ingin mencari second opinion. Awalnya. Namun selanjutnya mereka datang mencari dokternya.

Well, sangat mirip PTT dalam bayangan saya.

Dimana pun teman sejawat nanti bekerja. Carilah perasaan itu. Di UGD rumah sakit. Di poli umum rumah sakit. Di klinik swasta. Saat PTT. Dimanapun. Cari chemistry-nya.

“Saya ingin ditangani dokter A saja. Kapan dokter A praktik?”

“Dokter selain di rumah sakit ini praktik dimana lagi? Saya ingin ke tempat praktik dokter saja.”

“Saya ini kalau habis berobat sama dokter badan itu langsung enteng.”

Dokter tanpa dinding. Bagaimana menurut teman-teman?

Booker Prize: tradition of multilingual writers seems to be dying out – more’s the pity

    Glass Rooms

Is it a coincidence that J.K. Rowling studied French and Classics? Or that Shakespeare wrote passages of dialogue in Welsh and French, suggesting that he was conversant in both? To write successfully in your first language, it can help if you know a second – it is one way of seeing the world from another perspective and making comparisons, which is after all what literature is all about. But what of writers of contemporary literary fiction?

Researchers on the Open World Research Initiative at Swansea University have investigated the nearly 300 novels that have made the Booker shortlist since 1969 to find out. And as we await the announcement of the readers’ choice of the “Golden Booker” on July 8, which will name the winning novel from the history of the Man Booker prize that has “best stood the test of time”, their initial findings throw up a disturbing recent trend that language awareness is decreasing among British-born writers.

The ability of authors to understand another language gets ignored in surveys of the Booker Prize – multiple times. If a writer’s English is inflected by Australian, South African or Canadian roots, these origins are duly noted by literary journalists. Why not language background too? Language-switchers who grew up in the former British Empire are not the only multilinguals to watch out for on the Booker shortlists. Some of their British-born counterparts also learnt a second language, which influenced their writing in similar ways: their choice of subject matter and how they expressed themselves.

The second language of writers on the shortlists is nearly always European, with French firmly in first place (more than 20 speakers among the 200 writers who have been shortlisted for the prize). German, Italian, Spanish and Russian are also well represented, as is Japanese, albeit all in single figures. There is only one identifiable Czech speaker (Tom McCarthy, nominated in 2010 and 2015) but none with Polish.

    Spawn of Flaubert

The most famous literary French speaker is probably Julian Barnes, winner in 2011 with The Sense of an Ending. His breakthrough novel Flaubert’s Parrot, which was nominated in 1984 presents a series of takes on the great French novelist assembled by a Francophile narrator. Knowing another language is after all one way to see the world from an alternative point of view. For this reason many writers cut their literary teeth, like Barnes, on foreign-language material or experiences.

The author Julian Barnes was fluent in French.Amazon

The French Lieutenant’s Woman by John Fowles should have made it to the inaugural shortlist in 1969, but it was The Magus, the original “year-abroad novel” set in Greece, which launched Fowles’ writing career. J.G. Farrell, who studied French and Spanish at university, is famous for his “empire trilogy”, Troubles (named the “lost” Booker Prize winner in 2010), The Siege of Krishnapur (winner in 1973) and The Singapore Grip (1978), but his first novel A Man from Elsewhere (1963) is set in Paris.

In his debut South (1992), the Irish writer Colm Tóibín, who has subsequently been nominated for the Booker three times, was inspired by his own encounter with Barcelona as a young man – which he transfers to a female central character who narrates some of the novel. Switching languages for an author – or anyone – can change who you are in fundamental ways. Canadian author Yann Martel won in 2002 with The Life of Pi, but his first novel Self (1996) merges gender and language identity as the multilingual narrator metamorphoses from man to woman and back again, showing that language identity is bound up with other identities and can be part of the literary imagination.

    Early days

The shortlists for the Booker throw up some amazing linguists – but, at least when the British are concerned, their heyday appears to have been in the first two decades of the prize’s existence, the 1970s and 1980s. First prize for language prowess in any era would have to go to Anthony Burgess, on the shortlist in 1980 for Earthly Powers, who invented a new language for the dystopian Clockwork Orange and read and spoke up to ten real ones.

The multilingual Anthony Burgess.Open Media Ltd, CC BY-SA

Burgess was born in 1917, a year after Penelope Fitzgerald, who won the in 1979 for the evocatively entitled Offshore. Three other novels are set in Italy (Innocence, 1986), Russia (The Beginning of Spring, 1988), and Germany (The Blue Flower, 1995), each written as if by a native speaker, except of course in English.

Jewish emigrés were a further force for the internationalisation of British fiction. Sybil Bedford (1911-2006) found herself on the shortlist at the age of 78 with Jigsaw in 1989. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (1927-2013), who moved to India after the war, where her early fiction is set, won the Booker with Heat and Dust in 1975.

The Cold War also produced some high-profile language learners. Michael Frayn – who was shortlisted in 1999 for Headlong – was taught Russian during his national service, as was DM Thomas, whose White Hotel ran Midnight’s Children a close race for the prize in 1981. Thomas translates Russian poetry and has written a biography of Solzhenitsyn. Frayn’s novels include The Russian Interpreter (1966) – and his play Democracy (2003) was about the fall of Willy Brandt.

Their close contemporary John le Carré was recruited to the secret service on the basis of speaking fluent German, which he learned after running away to Switzerland as a teenager. He has called German his “muse”. But, sadly, genre fiction is not Booker material – and, in any case, le Carré is not keen on literary awards.

    The young generation

But what of younger novelists, say those shortlisted since the turn of the millennium? If we limit the field to British writers, then it is getting narrower. Graeme Macrae Burnet made the shortlist in 2016 with His Bloody Project. The Accident on the A35 from 2017 is very much a linguists’ novel about translation and transcription, as is Men in Space – the 2007 novel by the twice-nominated Tom McCarthy which is set in Prague and includes a series of jokes on interlingual miscommunication. Both authors are still under 50.

Philip Hensher, nominated in 2008 for The Northern Clemency, is reticent about his proficiency in German, which came to the fore in his 1998 novel Pleasured which is about the fall of the Berlin wall. Simon Mawer, nominated in 2009 for The Glass Room, lives in Italy. That is more or less it.

People who visit the UK are sometimes struck by how few books are translated into the world’s lingua franca which in all its global variants can seem sufficient to itself. As a culture English monolinguals risk missing out on how near neighbours are representing their experiences to themselves and each other.

Translation takes many forms, however, and mother-tongue English novelists could make up the gap by getting abroad, whether in person or through books, as previous generations were doing up to quite recently.

More members from Thai soccer team rescued in second cave rescue operation

    Glass Rooms

The second dramatic rescue operation began on Monday at 11am local time (2pm AEST), 16 days after the team first went missing, as anxious relatives endured another agonising day.

Fairfax Media was told the operation would aim to extract another four members of the remaining nine members of the soccer team and their coach, who remain trapped 3.2 kilometres inside the cave complex.

Rescue mission chief Narongsak Osottanakorn, the former governor of the Chiang Rai province, would not say how many more of the trapped team would come out on Monday.

In an upbeat assessment, he said “it’s perfect conditions like yesterday” and that “I expect in the next four to five hours we will have good news”, reflecting on the fact there had been fewer tropical showers than forecast.

But rescue workers and divers are still working in incredibly trying conditions, with roads leading to the cave thick with mud, temperatures hovering above 30 degrees celcius for close to 18 hours a day, soaring humidity and dark clouds and thick fog hanging low over the Khun Nam Nang Norn mountain.

In a boost to the rescue effort, after raining solidly on Sunday night the heaviest rains mostly held off on Monday.

Thai authorities have repeatedly warned that monsoon season rains could rapidly reverse the huge effort that has seen more than 100 million litres of water pumped out of the cave to clear the way for rescuers and smooth the path for the boys.

Headcam footage shows the treacherous path the rescuers must navigate in order to retrieve the stranded school boys and their coach.

    Photo: ABC News

Narongsak said Thai Authorities were considering allowing the parents of the four boys who had already been rescued visit them outside a transparent glass room. They were not yet allowed direct contact due to fear of infections.

The boys, he added, had asked to eat padkrapao, a chicken dish with sweet basil.

Some of the 18 divers who participated in the first rescue mission on Sunday would be swapped out and rested and replaced by others.

He would not provide the names of the first four boys who were rescued on Sunday, citing concern for the families, but he did say the “perfect ones, the most ready ones” were among the four who had been rescued – scotching suggestions that the weakest members of the team had come out first.

Ambulances waiting to drive up to the base camp near Tham Luang cave on day two of the rescue operation.

    Photo: Kate Geraghty

An official from Thailand’s Forestry Department said that despite heavy rains overnight on Sunday, “the water levels are still stable. Water is draining ok [from the cave]” and that operations to divert streams and pump ourt water from the cave were still under way.

In essence, the rescue plan aimed to repeat the success of the first attempt.

Thai Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said earlier in the day that before the operation — which will take the divers 3.2 kilometres into the cave and through perilous conditions — got under way, air tanks would have to be replenished and replaced along the route.

He had also suggested the second rescue attempt would involve the same crack team of five Thai navy SEALs, along with 13 international “all-star” divers.

Ambulances and a helicopter were seen buzzing around in the vicinity of the cave complex, ready to to spirit the four boys to a hospital in nearby Chiang Rai.

A huge support team of up to 90 people were expected to be involved in supporting the operation.

In a boost to the rescue effort, heavy rains mostly held off on Monday. Thai authorities have repeatedly warned that monsoon rains could rapidly reverse the huge effort that has seen more than 100 million litres of water pumped out of the cave to clear the way for rescuers and smooth the path for the boys.

Two helicopters wait near the cave for more evacuations of the boys and their soccer coach.

    Photo: AP

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was due to arrive in the Chiang Rai region, where the cave is located, at about 4pm local time to oversee the rescue effort and speak with the families of the trapped boys and their coach.

Earlier, Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, a Ministry of Health doctor at the hospital where the first four boys rescued were being treated, said on Monday that they had not yet seen their families.

He said that reunion would be delayed by 24 hours because of the need to perform exhaustive health checks and that after that, if all the tests were negative, then family could visit.

The identity of the four boys has not been publicly confirmed but Fairfax Media understands that 14-year-old Mongkol “Mark” Boonpiam was the first boy rescued.

Other media outlets have reported that Prajak “Note” Sutham, 14, Nattawut “Tle” Takamsai, 14 and Pipat Bodhi, 15, were the other three boys who had been rescued.

Australian doctor Richard Harris, an expert diver who was requested by the private British divers in the “all-star” team, and another Australian expert diver were expected to once again join the rescue mission.

Six Australian federal police divers and an Australian Navy diver will also be involved, working with Chinese and American teams, to bring supplies to the third chamber in the cave, which is the launching off point for
    the rescue.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said her expectation was that four more boys would be rescued on Monday.

“If we are asked to send more of course we will, but we are part of an international response group working under the guidance of the Thai government and the Thai navy,” Ms Bishop said.

James Massola is south-east Asia correspondent, based in Jakarta. He was previously chief political correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, based in Canberra. He has been a Walkley and Quills finalist on three occasions.

New York’s Overwatch League Team Finally Came Home To Meet Its Fans

    Glass Rooms

    Photo: New York Excelsior

At Overwatch League team New York Excelsior’s first-ever New York fan meet-and-greet, a preteen girl in braces broke out sobbing after coming face-to-face with player Joong-hwa “Janus” Song, a sub. Janus doesn’t play much. When he’s called in, he almost exclusively plays the ape hero Winston, and only on specific maps. In front of Janus, the fan and her mother held up a sign smeared with a glittery, red heart reading, “JANUS IS #1 IN MY.”

After receiving his signature, the girl, softly crying, moved to the back of the room, where cardboard cut-outs of Overwatch heroes in NYXL garb stood headless, ready for a photo op. Overwhelmed, she refused her parents’ attempts to get her to pose for a picture.

Later on, another fan gave Janus a pillow she’d knitted with his name on it.

The New York Excelsior, owned by New York Mets CEO Jeff Wilpon, had never been to New York before. (Every OWL team plays and lives in Los Angeles.) The NYXL – whose players are all Korean – is New York’s newest sports team in branding only, but they’re winners, and as a front-running New Yorker, how could you not love them? After a reverse sweep at the Overwatch League’s Stage 2 finals, NYXL won a cool $US100,000 ($130,125) and headed out east to greet hundreds of fans who turned up to the Mets stadium for signatures.

For hours, teammates Janus, Kim “Pine” Do-hyeon, Jong-yeol “Saebyeolbe” Park, Hong “Ark” Yeon-joon and Hwang “Fl0w3r” Yeon-oh sat at a long table as an assembly line of over 400 fans dutifully received their autograph along with a selfie. Attendees were voracious for face time with their local heroes who live in California.

New York Excelsior walking around the city.Photo: NYXL

The fan meetup went a little differently than originally planned. Paying homage to their owner, NYXL was slated to appear at the Mets’ second game this season. Fans would hang out with the team during batting practice and, at 7:08 PM, Saebyeolbe, the world’s best Tracer player, would throw the first pitch, a possibly high bar for an esports star.

It wasn’t meant to be, as it snowed yesterday morning and the game was postponed to July. Fans who muttered that they’d mostly just purchased the t-sports tickets to meet their esports idols were relegated to a nearby brewery.

In $US70 ($91) unofficial NYXL jerseys and $US60 ($78) official Overwatch hoodies, attendees slowly came in from the cold in a line that coiled around itself. Before NYXL debuted, they were separated from fans in a glass room where they could eat in peace, like Keith Richards devouring shepherd’s pie before a show.

Saebyeolbe, looking only mildly disappointed about his missed baseball opportunity, made his way through the crowd in a bomber jacket covered in pink flowers. A Tracer toy, a gaming mouse and a PC side panel were all presented to him for a signature.

In the months between NYXL’s inception and rise to the league’s number one slot, New York-based fans’ ability to express their devotion was limited to Twitch chat, Reddit, Twitter and other social media.

The League’s slick, polished streams had these players looking like untouchables. At the meet-up, fans finally had the chance show their love, to interact. A few gave pros handmade tokens of their adoration, along with effusive comments about their Stage 2 gameplay. At one point, about an hour and a half in, Saebyeolbe knocked a glass off the table. It fractured loudly. After a short silence, there were wild cheers and applause while the red-faced Overwatch pro smiled a little awkwardly.

With only a weekend in the city, the boys only had time to hit the major tourist spots – Times Square, etc. – plus the local LAN cafe that livestreams their games, an unofficial hub for NYXL fandom. I had a burning question for Ark: Did they try New York pizza?

“I got it the first day,” he told me. In lieu of a dollar slice joint, the team had gone to Rubirosa Ristorante, a pricey and somewhat inflated pizza restaurant in Nolita. “It was a pepperoni pizza. I felt that the dough was more crunchy,” Ark said, comparing it to others he’d had. “I really liked that.”

They are famous, after all, and these days, all fame is relative – esports or Mets players, culture is fractured, and so when you’re big in your niche, you’ve got to live it up. Ark later confessed that a portion of his Stage 2 earnings went toward dinner at Per Se, a three-Michelin-star $US340 ($442) fixed price French restaurant on the fourth floor of the Time Warner Center. It was Ark’s first time eating fancy food, he said, so he wore his dress shoes.

Shadow Of War Is Removing Its Marketplace, Gold And War Chests

Shadow of War’s microtranssactions might not have been popular, but unlike Battlefront 2 they were never removed from the game despite the public controversy. But that’s set to change on July 17, with the developers releasing a patch that will remove Shadow of War’s gold, war chests and marketplace entirely.

‘Cloak & Dagger’ recap: Twisted Hopes and Fears in 1×03, “Stained Glass”

    Glass Rooms

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Ep 1×03, “Stained Glass” aired on June 14, 2018

We already knew that Tandy and Tyrone were dealing with some pretty heavy stuff, but this week’s episode, “Stained Glass” gave us a further glimpse into their darkest hopes and fears. Meanwhile, Detective O’Reilly continues her investigation into the stabbing. Could she possibly turn out to be a future ally for Cloak and Dagger down the road? A foil of sorts for her very corrupt counterpart, Detective Connors. She was amazing in that first scene with Tandy’s would-be rapist. Read further for my full recap of “Stained Glass”.

    Shots Fired

Cloak and Dagger’s new friendship doesn’t seem to be getting off to the best start. Last week, they had a “meet cute” where Tandy picked his pocket and then they realized that they’d met way back when on the worse night of their lives. Now, there’s Tyrone standing in front of the stolen car she’s driving and shooting at her. Yea, Tandy’s not very happy with Tyrone at the start of this week’s episode. Thankfully, she’s able to use her light to save herself from injuries worse than a few cuts and bruises when she’s thrown from the car crash. Tyrone tries explaining that he wasn’t trying to shoot at her and he has no idea how he’s even standing there when he was just in the city. Tandy doesn’t want to hear it. She pretty much tells him to stay away and makes a run for it.

Three episodes in and it’s already well-established that Tandy fears connecting with people. She left poor Liam to rot after catching a glimpse of his hope for their future together. Her mother who is admittedly a mess even accused her daughter of running off when things get tough. It stands to reason that she’d been worried about connecting with this new guy who shot at her and seems to have awakened her strange new powers.

    That Voodoo That You Do

The show spends time in this episode delving into New Orleans’ long history with Voodoo. For much of the episode, Tyrone wrestles with the darkness inside of him. He wants to avenge his brother’s death and the anger seems to be eating him alive. He thinks he’s cursed. Evita sees how he is struggling with his demons and she offers to help. After giving him a little tour of New Orleans and some background on the birthplace of Voodoo, Evita takes him to her badass Voodoo Priestess auntie. She tries to get a read on him. Instead of Tarot cards, Auntie Clarisse uses regular playing cards. She tells him that the joker card is in a position where the hopes and fears are the same. This is outstanding given what we next from both Tandy and Tyrone’s points-of-view. Auntie Clarisse tells Tyrone that he needs a spiritual cleanse.

Evita’s auntie was on point in her assessment of the situation. The teens take a brief side trip to Whole Foods because forget the swamp. You need herbs and ingredients for your Voodoo cleanse, you go to Whole Foods. Tyrone and Evita have some pretty amazing chemistry and it’ll be interesting to see the show explore that and Tyrone’s connection with Tandy. Please just say no to love-triangles.

    Twisted Hopes and Fears

While Cloak is off learning about Voodoo and flushing his spiritual-self with those herbs, Tandy is trying yet again to get the heck out of New Orleans. It’s probably a good thing that she had to ditch the very obvious stolen car. Girlfriend, never still had the cans, streamers, and “just married” sign on that car. This time around, she decided to take the bus. She was settling down with her earbuds and the minute her hoodie went on, Tandy found herself transported. The other people on the bus disappeared and there was a flood of white light beckoning her off the bus. What did she find as she kept walking? Young Tyrone on a basketball court. He couldn’t see her and she couldn’t interact with him. She sees him with his brother Billy and the friends who try to convince Billy to go steal back that radio. This time it’s Tyrone who convinces his brother to stay there with him and play ball.

Later, Tandy glimpses another twisted scenario that repeats itself again and again. Tyrone is dressed formally and there’s this dining table set up out in a forest. This haunting song plays in the background as over-and-over, Tyrone tries to get revenge against Detective Connors and it ends in death and disaster. It’s disturbing as hell. Suicide by cop doesn’t seem to be what Tyrone intends, but everything he tries ends with him shot or hung from a tree. In one scenario his parents even die. It’s not until Tandy offers Cloak a dagger of light to use that we see a different ending. When Cloak picks up the dagger, it becomes handcuffs and Detective Connors runs off.

Tyrone experiences his own vision as his spiritual bath leads him through his empty house first. There are some pretty funky photographs hanging on the walls. We should probably find out more about them at some point. He leaves the house and ends up on Roxxon’s rooftop. I still need to know how he’s connected to Roxxon or if it’s just Tandy leading him there. He finds young Tandy wearing her tutu and tights. Tyrone’s journey takes him on a tour of Tandy’s fears. At one point, they’re witnessing Tandy’s father being tortured in a glass room by Roxxon board members. Later, Tyrone ends up at a church where young Tandy is giving benediction to a line of young men. Those aren’t wafers, though. She’s feeding them pills from a prescription bottle and they’re all falling to the floor the minute they walk away from her. Are these the men Tandy roofied and robbed? We see the one who tried to rape her. Tyrone believes he’s cursed. Does Tandy believe that she’s poison? It seems like it since the last person young Tandy hands off a pill to is her friend, Liam. She even ruffles his hair at one point and clearly, she cares for the young man.

Cloak and Dagger awaken from their separate visions after spotting one another’s forms on opposite sides of a stained glass window. The two seem to realize that they need one another. Tandy decides that she can’t run anymore. She decides to contact Detective O’Reilly. The cop showed up looking for Tandy earlier and told Mrs. Bowen about the assault and that she wanted to help the teenager. Of course, crooked Detective Connors butts his head into the investigation before O’Reilly can get the whole truth out. Poor Tandy, but at least she stopped running.

The episode ends with our duo together in the real world at the church from Tyrone’s vision. “We need to talk.” Yes, you do. Y’all need to talk and I’ve got questions. What was up with Auntie Clarisse 3D printing that figure? It was clearly Tyrone wearing his cloak, right? What was going on at that check-cashing place from Tandy’s vision? We saw young Ty surrounded by crumpled checks and they were signed over to him and had Billy’s name? Again, how is Tyrone’s mother connected to Roxxon? How amazing is the music on this show? That scene with Tyrone and the police was so haunting.
